Welcome to
with MONGER

Welcome. Come on in. Take a seat.
OK, let's call this what it is - with MONGER is a website where I can share my various skills and experience in the hope that you (yes, you) might want to work with me or have me work with you.
One thing I loathe about these kinds of websites is the gatekeeping of any costs or fees, so I'm putting this up front to start our relationship on an open and honest footing (or to scare you off, only time will tell).

about MONGER
An Introduction to
Roland J Monger
Devon born but Cornwall dwelling, I am a writer of reviews, stories and pretty much anything you can put into word form.
I have spent time in the Higher Education sector, the NHS, and the music industry as well as surviving three terminal cancer diagnoses and being voted the '27th Coolest Person In Cornwall 2020' [one place above Tori Amos].
As well as my writing, I have appeared on BBC Radio (local and national), spoken at various webinars, and been interviewed on podcasts such as the Talk of P-Town, the Inner Sleeve, the Cancer Cafe, Not Your Grandma's Cancer Show and more.
If you want to work with me in any capacity then checkout the contact MONGER page and let's chat.

My writing story began with a one week work experience stint in 1995 at the sadly defunct Scene Arts Magazine in Plymouth. This inspired me to undertake a BA (Hons) in Media Studies with Professional Writing at Sheffield Hallam University where I was also Listings Editor and then Music Editor for the student magazine, S-Press.
Over the following years I wrote for Melody Maker, NME and Select Magazine, whilst also writing strategic and marketing copy for the day job (UCL, Exeter University, University of Plymouth and NHS Plymouth) and PR copy for a variety of artists around the world.
Following a cancer diagnosis in 2016 and COVID in 2020, I made the decision to give more focus to my writing and have enjoyed success with short story and poetry competitions, contracted work for the MySunrise App Website, PRSD, and the Cancer Care Map, as well as the following larger projects.

'My Big Toe Is Killing Me was self-published in 2022 and documents my 6 year battle with terminal cancer. Available exclusively by clicking on the book.
"A frank, inspiring and astonishingly funny book..." Jane Corry, Times Best Selling Author
"A funny and uplifting read written by a talented author whose voice is akin to a mate chatting to you over a pint". Lee Trewhela, Cornwall Live
"An eloquent, moving and candid account of an extraordinary journey through healthcare services".
Dr Sue Linsley, University of Plymouth
The Angel In Dirty Boots is a children's picture book aimed at 3-7 year olds. The book tells the story of Debs, an out of place angel trying to be herself and fit in at the same time. Written by me, illustrated by Tatum Croft. The book will be available from October 2026.
"This is a sweet and deeply comforting story about self-love, individuality, and the incredible ripple effect of being courageous enough to live authentically. It's the perfect uplifting read to remind children that their unique gifts are exactly what the world needs. Beautifully illustrated and a true joy to read". Leanne Spencer-Harper, Children's Author

I take genuine joy in finding the right tone, the right voice, and the right turn of phrase to connect a message with an audience. If that sounds like something you could use then visit the contact MONGER page and let's chat.

Established in 2012, LWM is where I review new music from all over the world.
The blog has built a reputation for being one of the most ecclectic and supportive spaces for new music so pop on over and I guarantee you'll find something new to fall in love with....musically speaking.

testimonials about MONGER
Although my word is my bond, I wouldn't expect you to just take my word so here are some testimonials from people I've worked with over the years.
Public Speaking & Facilitation
Thank you for coming and sharing your story – the audience were captivated.
Catherine Foley, Supervisor @ Looe Library & Community Hub
Roland has inspired young writers through open and engaging discussions about the writing process, the challenges he has faced throughout his career, and the resilience needed to overcome them. His honesty, warmth, and willingness to share his experiences have made a lasting impression on our students.
His sessions are both practical and inspiring, helping students to build confidence, develop their skills, and better understand the opportunities available within the creative arts.
Roland has a remarkable ability to connect with young creatives, making the world of writing and publishing accessible, engaging, and achievable.
Lucy & Tamsyn, Academic Services @ Callywith College
I’ve had the opportunity to hear Roland speak at our Immunotherapy Study Day, as well as inviting him to deliver sessions for our oncology staff on the Fundamentals of Cancer Care university module on a number of occasions. Each time, he has been engaging, thoughtful and highly impactful.
He brings his personal experience into his talks in a way that feels honest and relatable, while also using humour to make a difficult subject easier to connect with. His sessions are always very well received by staff and leave a lasting impression.
Andrew Garner, Oncology Education Lead @ University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust
You won’t regret working with Roland!
I have had the absolute pleasure of knowing Roland for several years. During that time, he has provided his time for free to provide insightful presentations to delegates attending the study days I organise and run. This is despite him spinning a lot of plates. As well as attending for free, Roland comes well prepared, armed with a PowerPoint ready to accompany his witty tales.
When reviewing delegate feedback, I always know what the favourite sessions of the day will be. Hands down, it is always Roland.
I would not hesitate to recommend Roland. He is organised, responsive, adaptable and above all, a jolly nice bloke!
Nicola Jones, Macmillan Immunotherapy Cancer Nurse Specialist
I have known Roland in a professional capacity for six years, during which time he has consistently demonstrated great strength and professionalism in sharing his remarkable story with undergraduate nursing students. His calm and philosophical approach allows listeners the space to form their own emotional responses, making his contributions especially impactful.Roland is always eager to support our students’ development, helping to shape them into the best health professionals they can be. He has also generously donated several copies of his book, 'My Big Toe Hurts', for student learning and interest, a title that reliably sparks curiosity (and occasionally a smile). Alongside all of this, he has impeccable taste in music, which, in my view, only adds to his already impressive list of qualities.

Writing
Eloquent, insightful, honest and authentic - Roland Monger can take the most personal of subjects, music appreciation, and make it accessible and fun to all.
Lee Morgan, Editor @ News & Media Republic
I’ve worked with Roland in his capacity as a music writer for over a decade and have always been impressed by the clean, constructive and characterful nature of his copy when writing about our clients. He’s a joy to work with, punctual and reliable, and always approaches things professionally but with warmth, enthusiasm and kindness. I would recommend him to anyone.
Jamie Otsa, Director @ Wall of Sound PR
Roland has long been a supporter of Memphia's artists, as passionate about writing quality, engaging reviews as he is about the music he writes about. His passion, drive and incredibly reliable nature, coupled with his commitment to supporting artists makes him a valued voice in music journalism, I always look forward to what he has to say about a project I'm working on.
Jade Perry, Founder @ Memphia Music PR & Management
I’ve had the real privilege of knowing and working with Roland over many years now. He’s one of the most genuine people I know—serious, thoughtful and dedicated with his work but also with a great sense of humour. He’s an excellent writer, an engaging speaker, and someone whose life experience gives him real perspective and authenticity. I would highly recommend him as a great speaker or copy writer.
Dr George Brighton, GP & Director @ MySunrise Cancer Companion
As a music PR I always love it when Roland reviews one of my artists. Aside from being very professional and friendly, his passion and knowledge of music is wide. He knows exactly how to position an artist perfectly in terms of their contemporaries or influences, whilst also writing beautifully poetic descriptions of the music itself that are full of evocative imagery that gives the listener an insight into the visceral feeling of the music itself, which is a rare skill.
Hannah Gould, Founder @ Hannah Gould Music PR
